The BRIXEL family

Our family name

We are united by family name, whether by birth, marriage or adoption.
We share in very different degrees the history we have experienced and passed on.

The first bearer of the BRIXEL surname was born as Melchior Brüchsel in 1631 in Frauenfeld in the Swiss Confederation. After the end of the Thirty Years’ War, he moves to the imperial city of Esslingen as an apprentice, becomes a master mason and engraver in 1654, and marries in 1655.

The name BRIXEL is for the first time documented by Melchior when he has the birth of his daughter Maria Magdalena entered in the church register in 1657, and then the birth of his son Johannes in 1659. From then on, Brixel remains the family name.

The genealogy portal forebears.io estimates that there are currently around 350 bearers of the name living worldwide. They all are related to the first name bearer, most of them documented until the current 14th generation.

The migration history of the Brixels is well researched, and briefly described in the following history chapter. Further details are to be found in the members area, including the original documents of nearly all of the one thousand Brixels, who were born from 1657 until the end of the Habsburg Monarchy and the German Empire in 1918.
